Mrs. Nibha Namboodiri is a Post Graduate in Zoology, who hs been working for the welfare of captive elephants, since 1997, in an independent capacity. She was trained as a mahout, ( elephant handler), after which she became deeply involved in the cause of captive elephants.

Mrs. Nibha Namboodiri is a Post Graduate in Zoology, who hs been working for the welfare of captive elephants, since 1997, in an independent capacity. She was trained as a mahout, ( elephant handler), after which she became deeply involved in the cause of captive elephants.

Nibha’s work was given international recognition, when a documentary film made by the Icon films , Bristol, UK, was aired on BBC- Channel 4, National Geographic and the Discovery Channels in the year 2000.

In 2005, Nibha aopted an elephant for rehabilitation, which led to the formulation of the Elephant Care Centre, (ECC), a Public Charitable Trust. for the welfare of captive elephants. The Trust has initiated several micro projects and assisted several elephants in need. Between 2015 and 2016, she had collaborate with an NGO, Uravu in Wayand to develop various community based conservation and livelihood programmes in Wayand Dist of Kerala.

Currently she is trying to develope several micro level conservation models and community development initiatives in Palakkad District, with focus on developing sustainable monitoring and governance systems for such programmes.
